Jurong Bird Park Singapore
Bird enthusiasts will love the Jurong Bird Park. Home to thousands of exotic birds, this park offers up once-in-a-lifetime chances to get up close to some of most beautiful fowl you will ever see! This a great place to visit for a relaxing stroll, and families with kids in tow will also enjoy the many sites of the park.
Opened in 1971, the bird park was the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. The idea of the park was conceived when then-Finance Minister Dr. Goh Keng Swee visited a free-flight aviary in Rio de Janeiro, and wanted to create a similar attraction in Singapore. The park was also built with the intention of creating an area that city residents could easily get to for a relaxing break from urban life. He succeeded immensely in his plans, and the park has been a favorite of both locals and visitors ever since it's opening.
The park is divided into many different areas, each containing different plant and bird life.
The Parrot Paradise showcases over 110 different species of parrots from around the world. Over 500 birds reside here throughout 32 different aviaries, each of which was constructed to resemble the bird's natural environment. This part of the park is also dedicated to the research and breeding of many of its endangered parrot species.
The Waterfall Aviary is the world's largest walk-through aviary, and contains a huge manmade waterfall. 1500 birds make their home here, and visitors are treated to an intimate look into the bird's natural lives. At half-hour intervals between 11:30 and 4:00 every day the feedings take place here, and should not be missed.
There is a Hornbill and Toucan aviary where you can watch these playful birds eating and interacting. The amazing World of Darkness area allows visitors to see some rare nighttime birds such as Owls and Night Herons. The Penguin Parade is home to over 200 of these adorable birds. This above and below water viewing area is especially popular with kids.
Also be sure to catch the Birds of Prey show while visiting the park. This great program features over 20 different birds of prey interacting with their trainers.
You may want to make sure the kids have their bathing suits while visiting the park, as its newest addition is a huge playground/water park that is a great place for parents to have a rest while the kids splash around and cool off.
