Singapore Guide
The Republic of Singapore is a vast change from the rest of Southeast Asia. This modern, dazzling place is full of modern skyscrapers, high-tech lifestyles, clean streets and luxurious hotels. This is an extremely wealthy country and its people are quickly progressing it into the future, but the ancient undertones and culture is still visible to those who look.
Hotels in Singapore are gorgeous and tend to be on the Ritzy side, often giving visitors a treat for their relatively low prices. The hotels here are impeccably clean and friendly, and are perfect places to plan your day of exploring.
Seafood and curries make up a large part of
Singaporean cuisine, along with many different tasty fruit dishes. The best place to try many different dishes is at the various food markets. Here you can sample everything from delicious fruit dishes to spicy soups and salads.
Chinatown is fascinating to visit, with its excellent food stands, artists and fortunetellers. Visit the Chinatown Historic District to see the art-deco townhouses, and stop by Thian Hock Keng Temple to see the beautiful art and statues, including the gorgeous goddess of the sea statue. Another temple you can't miss is the
Sri Mariammam, which is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Chinatown.
Little India is another city-within-a-city in Singapore. Buy a
sari of the finest material available, drool over the exquisite gold jewelry, or just relax to the scent of jasmine incense. This district also has its share of temples, including the
Sri Veerama Kali Amman Temple, devoted to the goddess
Kali.
To visit some unusual animals, stop by the
Singapore Zoological Gardens, where animals such as the
Komodo dragon can be seen. If this didn't quite satisfy your reptile curiosities, try the
Jurong Reptile Park to see even more of these creatures. Right across the street from the Reptile Park is the
Jurong Bird Park, which is also worth a visit.
Singapore plant life can be seen at the
Singapore Botanic Gardens, including native plants, as well as a huge collection of orchids from the world over. The
Chinese and Japanese gardens along Jurong Lake also make for a lovely stroll.
While Singapore is not known for its rowdy
nightlife, it does have many high-class lounges where you can sip a classic Gin Sling before returning to your Singapore hotel room to retire.
