The Chinatown Historic District Singapore
The Chinatown Historic District was the original home of Chinese and Malay immigrants who came to this area in the 19th Century. It later became the main commercial district of Singapore, and was a slave trade center for many years. It now showcases the cultural heritage of Singapore, with its shops, merchants, bustling activity, temples and restaurants.

Exceptional examples of the architectural work of the Art Deco and Transnational periods (1840-1960) can be seen in this area. Be sure to bring along a camera to snap pictures of the colorful buildings and shops.

This is also a great place to sample some great food. Endless vendors are on the streets selling every dish imaginable, from traditional Chinese fare to curries, meats and sweets. Much of the food here is extremely reasonable, so you can have your pick of numerous different dishes.

The Ura Gallery traces Singapore's urban development from its roots until today. The galleries here feature many interactive and computer-generated displays, all of which show how the city was planned, built and is maintained to this day. An emphasis here is put on the "Concept Plan," a prediction for the development of the city throughout the 21st century.

Many temples are scattered throughout Chinatown. The Thian Hock Keng Temple, located on Telok Ayer St. is definitely worth a visit. This "Temple of Heavenly Happiness" is a beautiful building, guarded by stone dragons that are placed along the roof. The courtyard is adorned with statues, including the likenesses of Buddhisatra, Confucius and Kwan Gong.

The shops in Chinatown carry a wealth of fascinating purchases. Beautiful silk kimonos can be purchased in many stores, along with jewelry and cosmetics. Crafts and art are common throughout this area, and can make a perfect Singaporean souvenir. Many of the shops carry items a wide array of traditional and unusual items: medicines, dried snakeskin, exotic herbs and potions, and culinary delicacies such as sea cucumbers. Fortunetellers also line the streets, ready to tell you your future.
